Thirteen Years Old

My goal before this week is out is to tell a few stories pertaining to Mathews and/or Gloucester, our neighboring county, instead of going on and on about my dysfunctional family. (Don't knock me over with your sighs of relief, I'm right there with ya. Have been for some time.)

Today I shot some pictures of the Old Mill Skating Rink in Gloucester, which is chock full of memories and stories, enough to fill a book. I'd also like to shoot some pictures of the Court House, which is the closest thing we have to a downtown area, and write a bit about that.

We'll see.

Like most good intentions I have, something will probably happen to prevent me from following through, such as:

*We will have a tornado and the last 2 remaining shutters (one on the front of the house, the other on the back side) are blown off, or
*My car will break down, or the tires will blow out since I haven't tended to them in, oh, hmmmm, well now, never, and I need the car to commute the 50+ miles (one-way) to work, or
* Someone will show up at my doorstep with a straight jacket and injectable sedative and gently guide me to the padded van due to the above, plus this:

I woke up today the mother of a TEENAGER, and I am absolutely beside myself. One day I was 13, then I blinked, now I have a 13-year-old son.

Can someone please ask the nice folks in the padded van to hurry up?

Happy Birthday, Chesapeake Bay Son! I love you madly.
You are the greatest son a mother could ever hope for. And far more.

  4. I feel the same way - my oldest son turned 12 in April but he's like going on 15. He will begin 7th grade in a few weeks. I have trouble wrapping my arms around having kids in a grade from which I have conscious, vivid memories. It just ain't right. How can it be? I'm still only 25!

  5. Happy Birthday, Chesapeake Bay Son! Now that you're a teenager, your mom said she's gonna let you start driving her car around the neighborhood. Be careful because the tires are pretty well shot.

  6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CHESAPEAKE BAY NEPHEW! You truly are the best nephew I have!!! You're the ONLY nephew I have !!! You are so special and you somehow manage to stay sane while you are the only one on family vacations that can organize, plug things in, keep track of scores, put pictures on the wii, take pictures, find things, etc...and all the while you have a smile on your face. AND YOU TAKE CARE OF DYING BUTTERFLIES!!!!! Love you and have a great day!!!

  9. Happy Birthday CBS! Hope it's memorable :)

I used to go to the Old Mill Skating Rink. Perhaps we once skated past one another - oblivious to the fact that we would one day meet again. Sigh!

You need to go and check out Black Hockey Jesus. He is hosting some sort of thing where you post your problems and he has some chick solve them. Your Hermit Crab infestation should get top billing!!! hahahaha! He's pretty crude, but funny:)

  10. Happy birthday to you,
    You live in Mathews
You look like a crab cake
And you smell like one too!

This is my special, patented, rarely-used-in-public Birthday Song, just for CBSon. I will be resurrecting it for Teddy Kennedy's birthday, however, so don't feel TOO special. :)

Have a wonderful day, CBSon, and don't forget that 13 is LESS THAN HALF of 29, which is the age your mother and I are. Be kind to your mother today -- she has a TEENAGER!

  11. Happy Birthday Chesapeake Bay Son!

And to you CBW just remember this:
Puberty causes grey hair and wrinkles.
You get them from your teenaged son.
    (I had that T-shirt--True story.)

  13. Happy Birthday CBW's son. And CBW....life as you know it will be forever altered. You are just entering the Twilight Zone. You'll be on this bumpy side road for quite a while....the end destination is pretty awesome though. Good Luck. (hastily slamming back a drink).

  15. Chesapeake Bay Son and I thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the well wishes. (barely, and not without exertion)from the supper table where we ate a birthday feast replete with HOMEMADE ICE CREAM (absolutely and positively delectable) made by my mother and FRESHLY BAKED CHOCOLATE CAKE (absolutely and positively delectable) baked by my mother. So what did I, Chesapeake Bay Woman, do? I played on the internet most of the day and then hurriedly threw some dinner together that may or may not have been edible but was redeemed by the aforementioned delectables.

    Have a great evening, everyone.

  16. Of course there is a massive gap in my second sentence above that did appear when I first wrote the comment and mysteriously evaporated when I posted it.

It should have read that we pushed ourselves away from the supper table, (barely and not without exertion)...

It's all that sugar coarsing through my veins. Sugar and CBW do not mix well and I definitely overdosed tonight.

  17. I'm still laughing about your hair looking like a cat licked it all night, where do you get these funny sayings? You should change your name to Erma. Glad your home and the internet is back on! Happy Birthday to your son!!

  18. Karen Deborah, my entire life as a child, my Favorite Grandmother would tell me that my hair looked like the cat had been sucking on it all night long OR that it looked like Hooraw's Nest. (I never brushed my hair. I hated brushing my hair. I also hated washing it. Therefore it was terribly tangled and knotted.) I do not know who or what a Hooraw is, but if it makes a nest and my hair looks like it, it can't be good.

I will be writing about this grandmother in the future with some input from her daughter, AKA my mother.

  19. Oy about the 13 thing. Bossy hears you.

  20. What a thrill to have Bossy's post right above me!
Happy B-Day to CBW's son. I've had the honor of meeting him, and he is a remarkable, warm-hearted, mumma-loving, handsome little teen. You just want to pinch is dimpled cheek, I swear. In a few months, I too will have a 13-year-old urchin. Sigh.

Thanks for reading and thanks for leaving a comment. I thoroughly enjoy hearing what you have to say even if I don't always have a chance to respond personally.
