This beautiful place is Mathews County's Bethel Beach. I actually found Bethel yesterday after months of trying to figure out how in the world to get there.
Mathews might be a small place, but by golly it has a million miles of back roads that are laid out in no logical manner.Whatsoever. In fact, I drove home from Bethel a completely different way than I came in. I saw roads and places I'd never laid eyes on before.
By the way, the answer to how to get to Bethel Beach is as follows: I could never again recreate the journey I took to get there, but my best advice is just follow the swarming horseflies. That's horseflies, not houseflies, and indeed they are practically as big as horses. And houses for that matter.
Don't worry, though, they won't bite you because they're full as a tick after savagely attacking me today.
What is it with me and insects?

ReplyDeleteWould you say Bethel Beach has an infestation of horseflies? I hate those suckers, so I'll be down after they're gone.
ReplyDeletempm- Yes. A HUGE infestation. Huge. They divebomb the car when you drive up. It sounds like hail hitting the windshield.

We are so blessed to live on the bay and have the back drop of so much beauty!!! The cooler temps will make the horseflies go away...they aren't as bad on this side.

ReplyDeleteBN - It is a truly gorgeous place to live, with or without the darn insects. But we do have more than our fair share of insects. I suppose that is good, except when you're trying to take pictures and are having to swat and swing at the air like some crazy person.
lots - I agree about this bay of ours. You are so fortunate to not have the darn horseflies though.
Those are very pretty and photos with a sense of calm.

ReplyDeleteWhen we were kids, we used to go to a local beach in King & Queen that had a similar appearance. The horseflies were SO bad, and my parents would tell us to just run into the water to get them off. Unfortunately, that's where the stinging nettles lived....Why did we enjoy it so much??? I'm still trying to figure that one out!!! Maybe it was the picnic lunch...

BHE - Thank you for saying stinging nettles. I am vindicated. My son says, "Mumma, why do you call them stinging nettles?" I say it's because that's the way my grandparents talked, and I tell him to keep using it. Then he proceeds to tell me how nobody knows what he's talking about when he says it. I say all the more better.

ReplyDeleteYour beaches are to die for,you are the new crocodile hunter but we need a better name for you. Put CBMAMA to work on what to call the CBW-explorer, something catchy-crabby-infestation-ing to go with the photo exploring. It would be so fun to go with you. Lucy would be all over this.
Our stinging nettles are tall and green and look like what might result if a mint plant had a wild night with a pot plant.

karen deborah - the only spray that'd work on these flies is a spray of machine gun bullets. They're bigger than rats. And that's a good idea about the name thing...I'll have to mention that to my mumma.
foolery - I have heard of the nettles that are plants, but around here they are long, tentacled creatures that prevent us from doing much swimming when the water gets a certain temperature. It isn't mint jelly. You sure make me laugh.

ReplyDeleteAnonymous - swimming is definitely allowed at bethel beach, however you have to watch out for your feet (oyster shells, the occasional piece of glass, etc.) but more importantly when the water is warm enough there are stinging nettles. Anyway, swimming is allowed there on the public part anyway. It is a gorgeous beach.
