Wayland

The other day I mentioned Wayland Baptist Church, which is where I sometimes park my car to go jogging.

Recently I learned that my high school friend Lucy Smith was a member of this church.

(Click here for a picture of me and Lucy at the Mathews Christmas parade last year.)

One day I hope to see the inside of this quaint church. For now, though, I'm thoroughly content to wander around the outside.

Of particular interest to me is what lies out back.  Completely surrounded by woods and hidden from passersby on Ridgefield Road, the graveyard is tucked neatly behind the church.

Most of the graves are quite old.

Some, but only a few, are more recent.

Getting back to Lucy, she's the sort of friend who calls me on every holiday. Valentine's Day? I get a call from Lucy just to say hey. Mother's Day? "Happy Mothers, Day, CBW, it's Lucy just calling to wish you a happy day." She also called the night of  the recent tornado just to make sure I was OK.

Whenever I see her we both bust out laughing. And I'm not quite sure why.

I am quite sure it doesn't matter why.

One of these days I'm going to get her on video so you all can see what I mean. Lucy is a character, a born entertainer.  She exudes happiness, joy, and, most of all, a sense of humor about life. She would definitely be on this TV show I hope to create one day, which would feature the local characters that Mathews has created. I could interview a different person every day for a year and not run out of topics and people. So many ideas, so little money time.

This week is The Week when my project is due, and I'm still working on a loaned laptop that is threatening to put me in the Wayland graveyard to die on me, so postings will continue to be sporadic and stress levels will continue to run high.

Thanks for reading and have a great week.

Our church (well, our former church) was turned into a hospital during the Civil War. We still have some of the ones who didn't make it back home buried behind there. I remember being fascinated by the markers from the time I was a little girl until now--so much history. Back then, our town was called Jerusalem--don't exactly know why they changed it.

Mer-Another great choice. If you get a chance, email me at ChesapeakeBayWoman@gmail.com.

Blubird49-Those graves are indeed fascinating. Makes you wonder about the people, what they looked like, what their life was like, etc. I've always loved cemeteries.

In other news, so far the laptop hasn't died and I did manage to copy the photos for the book onto a flash drive, so I am very much relieved. Still have work to do on the writing part and a few photos left to take, but (I dare say) the light is flickering, however faintly, at the end of the tunnel.

It's almost over and then life can return to whatever normal was before the book.

CBW I know you are very busy but can you give me some info on the public beaches that are near the blog cabin, someone asked and I know you will have the answer...

I know that you talk of Haven Beach and Aarons Beach, are those close to the BC?

Go girl go! I see a bright light at the end of the tunnel...the worst is slogging thru the final details.
Can't wait till you have breathing space and can enjoy the season and the weather!

Thinking of you with deadlines looming over your head like guillotines. Sigh.
Your life post-book is going to seem SO easy. The drive to your real job will be a mere nothing. "I've finished the book," you can say to yourself, "I can do anything!"

Maria - There are several public beaches in the county, none of which are that far from anything, including the Susan area. You can't exactly walk to them but they're driving distance, ten minutes probably from that location.

Haven Beach, Aaron's Beach, Bethel Beach are a few. You can google Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve and get lots of good info on it.

There's also a small public beach in Hallieford at the mouth of the Piankatank River and another tiny one on Gwynn's Island fronting the bay.

Then there are other unofficial beaches that aren't considered public but the public doesn't seem to take heed. I will keep those a secret for now...

There are tons of public landings where people can launch boats but most of them don't have beaches.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement. Hopefully this week the worst will be done.

Well, I hope The Week is great. And afterward, you'll have a huge sigh. And then summer will be here.

Just sent you email, plus a referral, from a service called Dropbox, which will provide you secure online backup of files for free. Seriously great; I use it for my work all the time. (No this isn't a paid pitch. :) I hope everything else is going well, and I can't wait to see the finished book. I'm so delighted that you're doing it! I always knew you could.

Hello, this is Melissa F. Mason (Foster). Lucy (also my classmate) has that affect on people. She brings a smile to my face when I see her as well.
