Walking around a dock or a marina is sort of like walking around a campground, if you've ever done that.
Although each individual campsite is fundamentally the same--nondescript, unadorned, a plot of grass that is part of a bigger overall scheme--it's eventually personalized by the people occupying that particular spot. You might have one campsite with a tent and nothing more. Other folks bring lights, torches, flags, whirly-gigs and signs expressing who they are, what they stand for, or what that particular moment in time means to them.
Same is true with boats. The tone and personality of a boat and its owners can be set by just a few carefully selected words.
I remember walking around the marina at the Islander as a child, studying the boats, their names, and where they were from.
Truth be told, it's the same sort of entertainment I get from walking through a cemetery studying the names, the dates, and looking for any other hint of who the person was.
If you were presented with a new boat and could select a name, what are the few representative words you might choose?

ReplyDeleteI love walking/boating through marinas and reading the boat names. And cemeteries too for that matter. We have to name my dad's boat, but we haven't seemed to come up with a good one yet.

My first husband and I had a boat, it was named Rockin Robin, because his name was Robin and, well boats rock. And back a million years ago there was a song called "Rockin Robin" for those of you too young to get the connection.
ReplyDeleteI have had a number of canoes and kayaks, but never named them.
I basically met my late husband through his boat. It was named Hawks Nest, and I being a West Virginian and there being a state park called Hawks Nest, was very intrigued. Unfortunately the Hawks Nest is no longer around, being a true "hole in the water into which one pours money". But if I were to ever have another, she would be the Hawks Nest II.

I used to love walking around the Islander looking at the boat names too. Us Mathews girls sure knew how to entertain ourselves back in the day. What is wrong with young people these days anyway?
