Millers Cove

Sunday evening, in complete denial that this is the last week before my son departs for college, I went for a kayak ride in our cove to soothe my soul and quiet my mind.

This particular arm (is it called an arm?  regardless, that's what I'm calling it) of the cove is right near Clifton, which has a very rich history that includes shipbuilding, a women's finishing school and all sorts of possibilities for movie plots. The property on which my parents and I now live was once part of Clifton.

Although I was searching for herons or other creatures along the shoreline, I happened upon a piece of wood.

This piece of wood, part of a fallen tree, looked like a cross between

a dinosaur
an alligator

and a heron.

A heron gazing skyward, kicking one stump of an abbreviated leg upwards in some sort of high five to the heavens.

If I've not mentioned it lately, I'm very easily amused.  This is how I spent my entire life childhood.  Gazing at nature and making up stories, no matter how irrational.

Thank you for tolerating indulging my imagination.

Signed,

In Complete Denial That My Son Is Leaving Home

Pine Tree

The dead tree in this picture used to be a sand-submerged pine tree at Aaron's Beach.

I've taken its picture many times but it's never looked this bad.

For the first time since I've been visiting, there isn't one bit of green clinging to it.

It's only a matter of time before it falls.

Speaking of falling,

I was alerted by my neighbor Julie earlier this week (or was it last?)

that my Number One Favorite Tree of All Time at Aaron's Beach had fallen.

I'll post pictures of that sad sight next week.

Click here for a 2011 post that shows (in the second and third pictures, if you squint) the pine tree above in happier days.  It also shows my favorite tree (fourth picture, far right) that I'll talk more about next week.

Because that's what I do here on this blog.  Talk about inanimate objects as if they were people.

I think I may need to get out more. Or perhaps the sinus pressure is finally doing me in.

Either way, have a great weekend.

Boats III

These were taken from the boathouse at J&M Marina in Deltaville.

This workboat's captain evidently can't be tamed.

He's untamed, and he's unashamed to admit it.

Opposite Wild Bill's boat sits Miss Kristina.

Kristina looks like she has the potential to have fun, but she's just so tied down right now.

Instead she gazes wistfully at Wild Bill's boat.

These last two shots have nothing to do with the unfolding story of Wild Bill and Kristina.

Just some empty baskets stacked neatly in the corner.  Waiting patiently.

The End.

Have a great weekend.

p.s. If you live in or near Mathews, come out to the high school tonight for the girls' basketball games.  JV starts at 6, and varsity is at 7:30, and we need overzealous enthusiastic crowd participation and support.

Gwynns Island Bridge

This is my favorite bridge in the world, and I've been over many.

Well, technically I've not been over many outside this country, other than a few in Spain, but you know what I mean.

The Gwynn's Island bridge has many faces and many moods, most of which are calm and tranquil. Definitely not in any hurry to do anything. Sort of like life around here, plodding along at its own pace, oblivious to what's going on in the real world.

The other night when the CB Children and I went for a little excursion, we spent a lot of time around this bridge. She really likes having her picture taken and, although slow, she is not beyond performing stunts to get your attention.

Below, she was pretending to open for a Coast Guard boat, but I know better.

She really just wanted her picture taken.

I've been trying and trying to get that bridge to frame Callis' Wharf just so, in the evenings to take advantage of the setting sun. Try as I might I just can't get it how I want it.

Guess that means more evening trips to the bridge.

Excellent.
