More from Horn Harbor

These are just a few lingering shots from last Sunday's trip to the beach at Horn Harbor.

This weekend promises to be a hectic one . Today's forecast includes heavy rain and winds thanks to a tropical storm, which will make my 100-mile commute to and from work even more delightful.  Saturday my friend Lucy's* daughter is getting married, and I'll be taking pictures and serving food at the reception.  Sunday I drive Son to Newport News for Boys State orientation, then we're off to Charlottesville to meet with UVA admissions people Monday morning.

The words do not exist to express how much I am so looking forward to my vacation in July.

I hope your weekend is relaxing, free of stress and obligations.

*Click here for a 2010 blog post which includes a picture of me and Lucy at the Christmas parade.  Be sure to read my mother's comment about a remark Lucy once made in during one of our high school basketball games.  She'd have no qualms making the same remark today. She tells it like it is.

Fun in the Sun II

Wolf Trap Light is off in the distance, a speck on the horizon.

After a full range of stumbling blocks, which included wheels randomly falling off of boat trailers, the better part of Sunday afternoon was spent at a Horn Harbor beach celebrating my friend's Glenda's birthday.

Captain Craig and Billy

Lisa (left) is Capt. Craig's wife.  Billy (upper right) is Glenda's boyfriend.
(There will be a pop quiz* at the end of this blog post, so hopefully you're taking notes.)

See?  I told you there were cupcakes in the cargo hold of that skiff.

A Flock of Sea Girls

In spite of all outward appearances, the water was only about four inches deep here.

Most of the day's participants are hovering near the age of 50.

Happy Birthday, Glenda!

A great time was had by all.

*Pop Quiz

1.  When do almost-50-year-olds stop feeling and behaving like 18-year-olds?
2.  Why did we use floats when the water was ankle deep?

Answers:  1.  Hopefully never.  2.  Who knows?

Tin Can Alley II

Here are more jetties from Tin Can Alley. Almost all of these One or two of these may have been taken when my feet were planted outside the boundaries of the public beach and oh so briefly in the sands that make up private property. But it was just for a split second. Or two.

Promise.

I went to high school with the new sheriff in town, so hopefully he'll overlook this slight infraction. To be specific, I actually went to the Prom with him. He was a junior and I was a sophomore. If memory serves, and it may not, he wore a powder blue tuxedo. When I was a freshman, I went to the Prom with someone else who also ran for sheriff.

I'm not sure what any of this means, but one possible extrapolation is that anyone interested in running for Mathews County sheriff should have "Went to the Prom with CBW" on their application.

Sometimes I wonder just exactly what part of my deteriorating brain words like extrapolation are pulled from. Probably the very same section that authorizes and condones a reference to sheriffs, deputies and Prom dates when I clearly started off talking about jetties on Gwynns Island.

Maybe I'm just getting all nostalgic for Friday's 30-year class reunion.

(Or maybe I can't stay focused on one topic to save my life.)

Either way, this word association exercise blog post is now ending.

Have a great day.

Mathews Christmas Parade, Part Two

Here are some more shots from Saturday's Christmas parade.

Tatterson's was there.

I love this car.

A proud member of the Mathews High School Class of 1982.
I've known her since kindergarten and we traveled to Spain together in 10th grade.
That's a story for another time.  And oh what a story it is.

This Chick-Fil-A cow was about the only person marching in the parade who was not a member of the Class of 1982. Actually, I don' t know that for a fact since I can't see who is in the costume.
So it's possible.

This little doggie loved the parade, although I'm not so sure he was as enamored with those antlers.
He looks a little worried here, almost like that dog on the Grinch Who Stole Christmas.

Another friend, the husband of my classmate shown above.
My dog bit him over the summer, and I still feel guilty about that.
Sorry, Lawrence!  Love you, even if Buddy doesn't particularly!

Lookie here! It's Dr. Sterling, yet another proud member of the Class of 1982!

I think he was eating the very candy he was supposed to be throwing to the crowd.
Look at that guilty look on his face.  (Hi, Sterling!)

I was so busy trying to take Sterling's picture that I completely missed Santa Claus as he was approaching and only managed to get this side shot.  I had some things I wanted to tell him, too, it's a shame he went by so fast. Also, the lady in the green jacket (just above that Christmas present of the same color) is my 7th grade English teacher and the wife of my high school track coach.

The parade was all too brief, but what fun it was. I thoroughly enjoyed my class reunion seeing old friends.

Speaking of class reunions, our 30th is next year. Thirty years.

It's simply not possible.

*Sigh.*
