Diamonds in the Rough

The two photos above are of a building at the intersection of Providence and East River roads. I love this place and can hardly resist busting through that door that's ajar whenever I drive by. (Chesapeake Bay Daughter's BFF lives down Providence Road, so I pass by here frequently. Every single time I have to use restraint.)

Trespassing, however, would be a most unattractive addition to my resume at this stage of my life.

Below is a house that sits back off Old Garden Creek Road.

And here's a closer shot of that attic window.

I'm more motivated than ever (in spite of all that I have going on) to photograph these old places.

A couple of weeks ago, a tiny shed that I admired off Route 3/Windsor Road (just before you get to the cemetery) was torn down and burned.

I almost drove off the road when I saw it reduced to a pile of embers.  I'd become so accustomed to admiring it and telling myself I was gonna pull in there sometime and ask permission to take pictures. Now it's too late.

These are the times when my proclivity to procrastinate really bothers me.

So, in between commuting to and from my paying job; shuttling kids to and from sports events; working on the book; maintaining a house (which is missing one exterior shutter and has some siding hanging off thanks to a recent storm); and keeping the grass and shoreline cut to a point that we don't wake up one morning and find ourselves swinging from the top of a giant beanstalk that suddenly sprouted--well, keeping up with all these old places will be tough.

But I vow to try.

Have a great weekend that doesn't involve dangling siding; out-of-control yard growth; missing shutters and favorite places reduced to burning embers.

I love, love, love the old homes. Years ago, I was riding with our mutal friend and her sister through the back roads of Mathews. She and I were teenagers. Her sister saw a house that she thought was abandoned and wanted to explore. I refused to get out of the car, well they went in the back door and was hitailing it back in two minutes, if that. Apparently, when the got in the door they walked right into the kitchen with a pot of beans bubbling away!! OMGosh it was so funny, scary and very much trespassing!!

That is sad. But, I'm thinking you should try trespassing to get some shots...you know, just once....

I have never been in those at all...

I'm up for some trespassing as long as it isn't posted because that carries a larger fine and sentence. I also attempted to climb the pine tree at Bethel Beach however my legs are not long enough and the nasty water was slightly too cold so I didn't contine (my mother was with me so I had to hear how stupid I was to try). I have plans to burn some stuff, namely my wedding dress. Can't wait.

The temptation for me would be almost impossible to resist. CBW, I think maybe you should just tip toe up, look in the window, if you see no activity, go for it!!

Ann congrats on the new baby...boy or girl...

I want to thank all you fine ladies for the very kind words yesterday about my mom...it meant a lot.ty

wv: mistere: Its a mistere to me why someone doesn't photograph those old treasures...(sorry couldn't resist)

I have NO idea how you can resist just the tiniest bit of trespassing. Apparently you have altogether too much willpower, or self control, or possibly CB Mother did too good a good job in bringing you up.

Oh, there's a thought... could CBM go and check them out?

I envision a whol lot of spiders, so I wouldn't trespass.

There is an old plantation house near my parents'home and for years I lusted after it. Then a company bought it and turned it into offices. My lust is gone and I am heartbroken. I think I liked the mystery of what it was.

If you arent going to get close in person (code for trespass) then get a longer lens!!!!! PLUS you could always say "I thought I heard someone calling for help .. oh the camera, I had it in my hand ... "

I enjoy seeing the older buildings and always wonder why they are/were abandoned. What harm would it be to do a bit of snooping..oops..taking a closer look at these places? No one seems to want them now, so sad.

If someone asks, tell them you are taking a survey and need pictures to add to the information. That would almost be the truth:)

if the door is ajar... it's an invitation to explore. What if you don't trespass and they burn that one down?? Daryl has it, she is politicly correct.
