Surprise

Last week while running some errands, I noticed that the sky was clouding up and thought it would be a good time to take some pictures from the beach.

As it turned out, by the time I got to Aaron's Beach, the sky had completely changed and wasn't nearly as exciting as I'd hoped it would be. Although the beach here is always beautiful, nothing really jumped out at me begging to be photographed. I was a bit disappointed.

Even so, something compelled me to keep walking and looking, even though I come down here often and have practically memorized every grain of sand and every random shell washed up on the beach.

As I was standing with my back to the bay snapping a photo of some birds in the swamp marsh grass, I heard something behind me.

I turned around and was greeted by something completely unexpected.

That's a deer walking on the beach.

Yep. A deer.

Of course, deer are a dime a dozen quite common around here, but they aren't something you usually see while beachcombing.

She stood still just long enough for me to get a few shots before she'd had quite enough.

And away she scampered across the swamp marsh.

All of a sudden my otherwise mindless wandering routine trip to the beach had a purpose.

I just love surprises.

It would be so nice to see a deer on a beach, or in a field. I saw three on the way home tonight, but they're always in the same place: running across the road through my headlamp light in front of my car. I'm glad you got to see her in a more tranquil setting (so was she!).

And I dunno what you're talking about; that first photo is stunning. Happy Halloween, ¡Feliz Día de los Muertos!

I agree, the first picture is stunning!

Yes, I love the sky in the first photo, too.
I love seeing deer. I notice yours have big ears. Would they possibly mule deer like we have? Yours seem to have daintier bodies than ours, though.

great photos, and indeed a lovely surprise for you.
How's the book?

Despite Qantas grounding its entire fleet for a couple of days, and snowstorms in the US, the family are now on board their scheduled flight and are due in early in the morning. Amazing.

We saw deer prints last time we were at Aaron's Beach. Looked like a fawn was there too. They are incredible swimmers. Surprises are nice as long as they are good surprises.

So glad I came here this morning. This is wonderful. And something you don't see every day.
Yes, we see deer on a regular basis around here too, but not on the beach!

Foolery - Feliz dia to you as well.

deborah-Thank you. It was a nice surprise.

Kay-I believe our deer are white-tailed deer for the most part, but I am by no means an expert.

Annie-I can't read or hear about Qantas airlines without thinking of the movie Rainman. Qantas was the only airline he'd consider flying because it had the best safety record. Can't wait to hear stories about the family. The book? I almost forgot about that. It's printing as we speak. Supposed to be available December 5th. We'll see...

DJ-I almost put that as a disclaimer when I wrote this last night. There are most definitely bad surprises, such as a praying mantis on the kitchen spigot (that happened a while ago but it's still etched in my mind as "bad surprise" to wake up to).

CG-Good to hear from you. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods.

Daryl-I believe you captured some of our native "sharks" on one of your visits, no?

Fighting Mermaid - It was a good walk, very good indeed.

MPM-If you buy the brick house on Waverly Lane, you'll have them feeding in your yard every night. Ask me how I know...

Well, Tuesday is almost over, and tomorrow is another very, very busy day between work, commuting, an athletic banquet and my son's induction into the Beta Club, all of which mean I'll be on the go well into the evening. Serenity now.
