Old and New

Here are some more shots taken from my friend's property over in nearby Gloucester, the Glenns area to be exact.

I can't remember jack the older I get I may be inattentive to details and often can't remember my own name specific names of birds or insects or road names or whatnot, but I'd call the car above a Datsun.

Remember Datsuns?  Now they're Nissans.

A high school friend had one.  A very sporty, brand new 280Z, if memory serves me.

Although I hate to admit it, I remember being a little jealous.

This may explain why  I took such satisfaction in beating him every now and then in ping pong, which was what we did in gym.  Every day.  We played ping pong.  Day after day after ping pong playing day.

I don't remember why we played so much ping pong in gym class, exactly. It had something to do with the school not wanting you to fully participate in gym class if you played sports and had a game or a track meet or something.  I'm sure it was intended to avoid injuries during sports season.  Or something.

Anyway, to this day I love ping pong. And I no longer care about Datsuns. Or Nissans. Not in the least. Give me a VW bug any day.

However, this post was not started with the intention of spending any amount of time on the topic of ping pong or jealousy.  Or even Datsuns.

I just wanted to share some shots of old things

sitting amid the new growth of spring.

Wait. I had a friend with a 280Z, too. Now I cannot think of anything else! Thanks.

I had guy friends with a 280Z, a Mustang, and a Mazda RX7 and I got to drive them all. I thought the fact that my boyfriend let me drive his brand new Camaro Z28 meant that he loved me. (Ultimately, it did not.) I loved driving other people's fast cars because my Buick Skylark just... wasn't.

A friend of mine who just returned from his stint in Iraq bought a '78 anniversary corvette. He sent me pics. He's a jerk. I saw the shot of the old datsun with the vines growing on the window and I think it looks exactly like I feel... including all the scraggily vines/hair.

I hade a Datsun 200SX and hated it when they changed the name to Nissan.

Now I'm gonna be stuck in the past, and looking for someone to play me a game of ping pong.

omg, my Datsun 200SX was also a '77 just like Maria's. Mine was like a dusty rose-ish color and the first day I had it, two cops stopped me.

I'm another old thing.
I'll send you a picture of me.
In the mid-80s my kid brother bought a Mustang Cobra with "Official Pace Car 1979 Indianapolis 500" written on the side of it. The next day, he went to show it to his girlfriend and got a speeding ticket on the way.
I loved to drive that car. It cornered like a dream!
I had an '83 Hyundai Pony the same gold color as the Mustang, and my brother threatened to paint the name of our home town's local foot race on it: "Official Pace Car, 1983 Bay Run"!
By the way, my husband the referee loved your description of the after-dinner basketball challenge.

My brother-in-law had a 280Z. He bought it after he sold his Fiat Sport Coupe (to me).
That freaking Fiat broke down all the time, but it was damn fun to drive. I decided that FIAT was code for "fit it all the time". The 280Z was cool, though.

Yep, that's a Datsun Z and, being a retired mechanic, I remember what a pain in the butt those dual overhead cam engines were. Best thing to do when it wouldn't start was hide it behind a barn in Chesapeake, Suffolk,Glousceter etc and forget about it. I'll bet there are 1,000 of them buried in Kudzu and quietly rusting away in Isle of Wight County, alone.
