Ghost Stories-Part Two

Above is a peek at the bay through dead trees at Bethel Beach. These are not trees which washed ashore willy nilly. They're trees from a forest that existed before the wind and sea declared otherwise. I'll talk about these more next week. Today's post is a continuation of yesterday's theme of who knows what, there is never any theme here local ghost stories.

"The Ghosts of Tidewater" by L. B. Taylor describes several different versions of the Old House Woods story. Here's another account from a 14-year-old boy:

"A friend of mine and I were taking a boat from Mathews Yacht Club over to Moon post office. You go up Stutts Creek and then over to Billups Creek. It was just after sunset and everything was sort of misty. Then about a half mile from the mouth of the creek, we saw it. We both saw it, but couldn't believe it. I'd never seen anything like it before.

There was a big sailing ship floating in the marsh. It had two or three masts and was made of wood. There's only a foot of water there but it looked like it was floating. It was the kind of ship the pirates used. We watched for about a hundred yards more and then it just disappeared. I went home and told my mother, but she just laughed.* She said everyone knew of the stories about the ghosts in Old House Woods."

Chesapeake Bay Woman here, just dying to talk about ghost stories but also chomping at the bit to say this, which naturally is completely unrelated:

*She Just Laughed or We Just Laughed should be written across a souvenir T-shirt from tonight's only first official meeting of the Oyster Festival Planning Commission. Within one minute of the four of us sitting down, I was wiping tears of laughter from my eyes. It isn't every day that you take a preliminary sip of water only to find hillbilly dentures swirling around in the bottom of the glass. Etc.

Thank God for Blog Friends and their incredible sense of humor. Happy Birthday to Noe Noe Girl, and thank you to the entire population of Shackelfords, Virginia, for tolerating four women who could not stop cackling.

Well, at least one of them couldn't.

p.s. Happy Halloween

I stumbled across your blog a few weeks ago when I was searching for ghosts in Mathews. I will soon be what you term a "come here", infiltrating your lovely little town, with husband, dogs and horses in tow. He is actually the Bay lover and fisherman, we are leaving my beloved mountains to semi-retire.
I won't say why I am looking for ghosts, or actually not looking for ghosts, I will let people meet me first. I am nutty enough without going into any of that.
What I signed on to comment about was your fiddler crabs post. It had me laughing out loud. When the realtor was showing us property, I kept seeing little things running across the road, not having my glasses on...you know ...age! I thought they were large beetles! When he told me they were crabs, I was heartbroken that he was crushing by the dozen these cute little crabs...you are reading a post from someone who slows down for butterflies! See...nutty!!!....but then I eat crabmeat so....what am I upset about...other than 15.00 a lb crushed on the roadside if they were real crabs!!!
Please tell me Onemo is ghost free...no, I am just asking to be set up aren't I???!!!!
Anyway, Happy Halloween to all! I have truly enjoyed your wit keep up the writing!

Snotty oysters not withstanding, oh, how I wish I lived closer! How can I persuade you to part with the CB recipe? Would you be tempted by 'five minute chocolate cake'?

Ghostless - Onemo is where the barn was that I posted about yesterday --where the wave of perfume from nowhere hit me. Thanks so much for reading and commenting. Send me an e-mail if you ever want to meet - I can take you around to some of the allegedly haunted places. Welcome to the Fiddler Crab Capital of the World, you'll love it here except for when you have to drive over crabs which you'll do often down Onemo.

Mrs. F. - ARe you talking about the recipe for fried snotty oysters? My father has that, but he'd be happy to share. It's a rather simple process, and the secret is in the coating.

It's hot and humid here today, and it's only 9:30. They say it's going to hit 80 later on. Feels like we're already there.

Happy Saturday.

Hot and humid?!??!!! I have the heat on up here on the mountain!!! Oh my! am I in for a culture shock!!!
I don't want to jinx the deal on the house, my husband is down there putting a contract in on it today, I've only seen photos. Sure looks like it could have a ghost but just doesn't "feel" like it. Other houses I have seen photos of I can't say the same. There is a beautiful house down there, that I just couldn't bring myself to go look at...I just had a feeling...just looking at the photo...see I talk too much. Must be because it's Halloween!

Once I get settled in, I would love to meet you. However, you may not want to be near haunted places, once you know my history with "spirits"??!!
I need to get the hang of posting on blogs, part of what I deleted just got posted and what I thought I posted didn't...no harm done, just had second thoughts about jinxing the contract, we've missed out on 4 houses so far!! all in one week!

Daryl-The teeth caused side-splitting laughter. Just wait until the pictures go up. Big Hair Envy has them.

Ghostless-It's very hot today - hot enough for shorts and yard work. Good luck with the house, I hope it works out. If you enjoy old houses and barns, you willhave plenty to keep you entertained around here. The hard part is resisting the urge to go inside, an urge I fight every single day.

I would definitely love to meet, just let me know next time you're in town. 4 houses in one week? That's pretty amazing. Hope this one works out, as I say you will love it here.

Back to the yard work.

I KNEW I should have worn my "pretends" to dinner last night. Lesson learned.

Now. Where did I put my teeth...

I really "pretended" not to pee my pants last night! Only the waitress knows! Now going to practice my hokey pokey tooth dance!

Did someone say diapers? Things "down there" ain't what they used to be after three babies, ya know...

Wish I could have been in on the giggles.

Ghostless, you're going to love it in Mathews!

Congratulations to Ghostless and I will be your neighbor too, some day -- once I am my own last remaining relative here in California. Until then I am married to this world, *sigh*, though I really think I could live in Mathews.

Wish I could have been there at that dinner this weekend!
