Fall Fields

The formerly lush, green soybean fields are now yellow, soon to be brown, soon to be harvested.

These soybean fields are located near North.

North is a place, a location, a spot on the map, a post office (and at one point a store).  North is also the name of a river that runs through here.

The fact that it's also a direction makes things interesting, particularly when conversing to outsiders--such as an editor sitting in South Carolina, for example, who asked me to confirm or correct the location of a place once known as Club 14.  I said it was located on Route 14 at North.  She thought for sure that was a typo.  But Club 14 was located on Route 14 at North. At the spot on the map called North.

No, not a typo, just another little Mathews County quirk.

We do quirky right.

A few years ago someone writing in the Gazette-Journal had a witty description of their location. I don't remember it in its entirety but it went something like, "A little south of North, west of the East River and just a few hundred yards from Miles."

I love the second photo.
I do NOT envy that editor, trying to understand your area. LOL — I'd love to be a fly on the wall, watching her tear out her hair!

Collards Eater - That is a very clever (and no doubt entirely accurate) description. Toss in Moon to the mix of unusual place names around here and a person could have a field day.

deborah - Thanks...I am east of North, perhaps slightly northeast of North.

DJ-Hopefully you'll be spending your birthday in Deltaville. I know one gift I will not be purchasing for you. And it involves a flock of seagulls....

Daryl-They are pretty now but I love them when they're so green. The yellow means they're dying and that means winter is right around the corner, and I don't do well with winter and its lack of sunlight.

Kay - The poor editor. Gracious. I had to write a lengthy explanation of my use of the term Court House, which is what we call the downtown/village area (never mind the fact that there is also a historic courthouse, which was the original court building). They were very, very patient folks to work with, that's all I have to say. (The e-mail exchange you'd really bust a gut laughing at is one where I told them I couldn't send a particular file because it was too large and my e-mail/internet system couldn't handle it, and they nonchalantly said, "Send it in a zip file." My reply was, "The only thing I know how to zip is a coat." It went downhill from there. To repeat, they were very patient.

I'm not putting up a post for Thursday for multiple reasons, all of which involve too much going on, but I hope to at least have some photos up by the weekend.

So glad that at least someone does quirky right.

I love quirky. Good quirky even more so. When the people named Hell, Michigan, I don't think they did quirky well at all.
