Tornado

Much to our surprise, the temperature rose to 80 degrees on Friday.

Even more surprising, an incoming cold front spawned a tornado down at Davis Creek.

Davis Creek is at the southernmost end of the county,

in a little neck of the woods called Bavon.

Those who attended Blog Fest a couple years back will remember this as the place where we caught the boat to tour the lighthouse and surrounding area.
(Click here for a few pictures of us standing around before boarding the boat.
I know I have photos of the building, just not readily available.)

Thankfully, nobody was injured.

After ravaging this adorable structure, the tornado plowed through the yard below, taking down a power line and damaging nearby homes and sheds.

Just to the right of all this, everything appears untouched.
But if you click on the image (below),
you can see some of the roof was torn off that structure.

And yet, in the middle of all this insanity chaos, there is a message of hope.

This and the boat in the first photo are one and the same.
The irony in the name is priceless.

For once, there is a lot for me to report--over and above the tornado, which is noteworthy enough. Click here for more news coverage about that.

First, the eighty degree weather inspired quite the photo tour for me on Friday.

Saturday I raced out to capture the damage from the tornado.  Again, we are grateful nobody was injured and thankful that it wasn't worse.

Before the tornado, however, Chesapeake Bay Daughter (a tornado herself on the basketball court) went on to win her final game, which meant her team was undefeated for the season.  That last game was absolutely brutal and deserves its own blog post.  In the meantime, this morning at 7:35 a.m. she, another teammate and her coach will be featured on our local radio station 99.1 WXGM. I will be listening from my office in Williamsburg an hour away. My parents are taking her to the station.

There's so much more to report about last Friday, but we have all week to talk about that.

Here's to a great Monday and an even better week, hopefully free of tornadoes and chaos.

So glad that no one was injured in the tornado! It left quite a path of destruction...
Congratulations to CBW daughter!!!
What a season she has had and now to be on the radio - you must be a very proud mama! She is following in your footsteps!

Glad no one was injured Saturday. I'm getting rather sick of tornadoes. Congrats to CBD, I went to the radio website thinking I could listen over the net but didn't see that option anywhere.

CBW,some nice photos of the damage from the tornado. The building you were speaking of was formerly known as Henry Owens Seafood. It is my understanding this establishment has been around since the 1950's.It was primarily used as commercial pound fishing business by the Owens family.Althought, they were known to use some of their fleet of Chesapeake deadrise workboats, the Ellen Marie, the Thomas E.,the Lavenia H.and the L.R.Smith as commercial "drudge boats" for crab drudging as it termed in this neck of the woods,in the winter months, but the proper term would be dredge or dredging. It is prior to this destructive tornado one of the last known standing in this area of Mathews County.

deborah-Thank you! I am so proud I am about to bust wide open. I had the radio blaring this morning at work and told anybody who would listen about her game and season.

DJ-Yes, we were indeed lucky to have escaped injuries. Re the radio/internet I don't think they have that capability yet or if they do it isn't well known/publicized.

Daryl-YES, it was the day we saw those sharks...surrounding the boat.

Waterman JP - Thank you so much for your valuable input, and also thank you for clarifying the whole drudging thing. I always knew it was pronounced (around here anyway) "drudging" but would be spelled (in books, etc.) "dredging." Just another Mathews quirk, I suppose. Stay tuned - you will be mentioned (and pictured) in tomorrow's blog post about our Friday visit to the nursing home.

(And to those who don't know what I am talking about yet, I was not scouting out a room for myself, in spite of the fact that some days I feel as if I should. I stopped in to pay a long overdue visit to a local legend. More tomorrow.)

Maria-Your namesake had a great season. Hope things slow down for you soon.

Thanks for commenting!

Sorry I haven't been around for a while. Having 'puter problems again.

Thanks for the info on the tornado. I had heard there was one, but didn't get much info from Richmond stations. So glad no one was hurt. The wind was pretty bad here Friday and I think a tree fell in the woods by the house. The whole house shook and I heard a big thump at the same time. Scared the you-know-what out of me and I ain't afraid of nothin'!

Also, congratulations to CB Daughter! Way to go!

Our offspring is now age 43. Before he reached high school (as I recall) we rode bicycles to Bavon - from Mad Calf Lane - round trip about 34 miles. Our usual bicycle day trip length in Mathews County is twenty-five miles so this day's trip was a record for us.
