Signs

Williams Wharf

..."Signs, signs, everywhere there's signs

The boathouse at Williams Wharf

Blocking up the scenery, breaking my mind

Just a random No Trespassing sign

Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"

( Youngsters who have never heard the song, click here. )

It's a swamp filled with fiddler crabs and water moccasins.

CBW's answer:  Yes, I can read the sign.

But I can't seem to heed the sign....

And really do we need the sign?

Because maybe the sign just makes me want to do the very thing it's discouraging all the more.

But for the record, I am a long-haired freaky person a law-abiding citizen.

***********

Are there any unusual or noteworthy signs near you?

Who here remembers the railroad crossing sign next to the high school?

No railroads in Mathews County.....maybe not anywhere on the Middle Peninsula (the land between the York and Rappahannock Rivers). No interstate highways. I like the quiet.
Where I moved from, every two or three hours, a west-bound coal train headed by four to six diesel locomotives added their tugging moan to the never-ceasing din of the interstate highway.

nup, sorry, don't remember that one. :-)

most interesting sign:

"Falling People"

on the highway I drive up the mountain to see my grand-kids.

There's a parachute place nearby!! The little planes take off and land there. Unfortunately I have rarely been in the right spot at the right time to see any...maybe once.

We used to live partway up a steep hill in British Columbia. At the bottom of the road going up our hill, my father put a sign that said "Private Road. Trespassers will be shot on sight. Beware of Vicious Dogs, and Bull in Pasture!"
Anyone foolish enough to think we had a pasture up that hill, turned around, went away, and we didn't miss them at all.
All our friends arrived laughing. Our one dog, a collie, was very friendly, and there was no place to put a pasture OR a bull.

OMG... I LOVED the rail road sign. and No BayBrowder there was no railroad.. just the sigh.

I don't like signs.. i don't read them at least I pretend not to read them so i can say.. OH I didn't see that there.

Speaking of signs.. this one time I was driving.. thankfully I was the DD of the evening when we passed a Deer Crossing sign.. my friend leaned up and peered at it and then says... "How do you think they trained the deer to cross right there where the sign is?" Oh my.

Not only how do you get the deer to cross right at the sign, but how do you get them to hop across on their back feet like that? And where exactly to antlerless deer cross?

I have several photos of myself in front of various No Trespassing Signs

We have "Share the Road" signs everywhere for the lycra-clad bicyclists who shame me every day by speeding past...

My favorite sign, so far, was spotted in the Bahamas many years ago. Instead of "Merge", their signs say "Squeeze"! LOVE it!

My uncle recently traveled to Scotland. He sent me a photo of him standing under a sign that read, "Old People Crossing"!!

WV: shnease Wasn't she Uncle Buck's girlfriend?

I remember the railroad sign...remember when it was put up and the short track installed. Boy was there ever a lot of talk about it. That house was my great-great-great-grandparents Guion's. My Great-grandmother born there and she had a play room in that top-most room or cupola. I have secretary and a chair (one of their dining room chairs) among some other items from there when they owned it mid-late 1800's. Seems I went in that house once as a TINY/Young child but just remember getting out and going inside nothing about how it was inside---don't recall who owned it then...early 50's.

This week's kindergarten homework is for the kids to look around as we drive places and read the signs. I've a talkative 5 year old narrating every mile I drive.

My favorite signs over the years include a plethora of GARGE SALE signs and signs for PEACHS. Then there's the ubiquitous (where we live) Beware Large Hayseeds on Tiny Tractors signs (click the link):
