Three Things

Welcome to Three Thing Thursday, where anyone reading is free to share three things, whether they're related to anything I'm talking about or not.  In fact, the further you steer from what I'm talking about the better. In fact you don't even need to read my stuff in order to share.  In fact, I'm going to stop saying in fact now.

Let's begin.

1.  The photo above, pulled from the archives, is from my Memorial Day camping trip over on the Eastern Shore with the Chesapeake Bay Children.   I absolutely love this place and wish I were there now with no other places to be; absolutely nothing to do; no logistics to coordinate; no animals to feed; no book deadlines and no chores to complete for at least three solid weeks.

2.  The Mathews High School Cross Country teams won their district meet yesterday in Williamsburg.  Although I couldn't make it due to my paying job, reader Bay Browder, who used to coach cross country himself, was in attendance. He  really needs to help out with spring track (the 400, 800, mile and 2-mile or at least the mile and 2-mile) and I will continue to pester him about it.

3.  While waiting for the cross country bus to arrive at the high school after the meet, I scrunched down in my car and pretended to read a newspaper, all the while spying on some teenagers gathered not too far from where I was parked.  Rolling my window down allowed me to tune in to their conversation which went something like this:  "Call him for me."  "No!  I'm not calling him. You call him!"  "No. You."  "He's not my boyfriend!  You call him."  "No, you!"

I'm sure you'll be shocked to learn that my windows quickly came back up not because of this stimulating conversation but because the mosquitoes sucked six pints of blood from my arms while I was trying to hear this riveting exchange.

Yes, it's almost November and we still have mosquitoes the size of chicken hawks.

Yes, I'm 45 years old and the most exciting part of my day involves eavesdropping on teenagers' conversations that are as mind-numbing as the list of ingredients on a box of Twinkies.

Somebody save me. When did this become my life?

Now it's your turn to share. In addition to your three things, can you tell me one exciting thing you did yesterday? Seeing as my definition of exciting involves spying on teenagers while mosquitoes eat me alive, I'm sure you'll have no problem thinking of something.

Thing 1. Yesterday was my first day of quitting coffee because of disabling acid reflux. Yesterday was awful. Today wasn't much of an improvement. Withdrawal headaches, both days. Ugh.
Thing 2. I'm cheering for San Francisco (the west coast team) and my husband is cheering for Texas (the American League team) and San Francisco won. Yay.
Thing 3. I got lots of laundry done yesterday and today because I was too headachy to write much. Not as exciting as eavesdropping on teenagers while being eaten by mosquitos, but the World Series is pretty exciting, especially cheering for different teams.

1. I can't sleep. I went to bed two hours ago and although this doesn't happen too often, it's awful when it does.
2. The only exciting thing that happened today was seeing a former student at the local WalMart. She's such a sweetheart.
3. It's sticky here.

1. As I write this, Mathews County and most of eastern Virginia is under a tornado watch....local TV just posted a notice that the watch has been extended from 2 AM to "early morning hours"......hoping no tornados develop.
2. Not only did both of the Mathews cross country teams win Tidewater District Championships today, they dominated....four of the first five girls....seven of the first nine boys. Competition next week at the Regional will be much tougher. GO MATHEWS XC!!!
3. The situation for Honey and her canine friends at the soon-to-be-closed Humane Society overflow shelter is becoming more critcal each day...closing date is now November 30th with no extensions. If you are local, please consider adopting or fostering one of these wonderful animals....and please pass the word to everyone to whom you talk of this acute situation....it's a life or death matter.

The exciting thing I did yesterday.... stayed up until 2:45 AM talking on the phone then having to get up at 5:45 to get to work early. Ok, maybe that's under stupid thing I did yesterday

1. Due to my trip to California which is taking place in exactly 3 weeks, I will not be attending Oyster Fest...

2. While I'm sad that I won't make it to OF, the opportunity to finally meet someone in person I've know for 14 years is a pretty big deal. Plus for 3 days and 4 nights I will not be on the phone until 2:45 every morning.

3. I've started drinking coffee in the mornings again....

Tornado Watch is scary. We get those out here on the prairie, too. I feel like I'm not in Kansas any more, Toto.

I hope Mathews County escapes, I hope the tornado blows uselessly out to sea.

1. No tornado's hit Mathews.. although I know an acre that I would not have minded much.

2. one of the participants in the conversation was probably my brilliant teenage daughter .. yes I know this is an oxymoron.

3. I have a date on Saturday night and NO ONE.. I MEAN NO ONE better screw it up.

4. I am still not attending OF. I am still not drinking.. wine.. coffee yes I couldn't stop.. wine no.

1. I saw the tornado watches/warning popping up all over Southern Maryland and was very happy I was not trying to navigate the Gov. Harry Nice Bridge during all that WIND.

2. Yesterday I was feeling kinda sad and a little overwhelmed and thought to myself, what I wouldn't give to spend a day in bed.

3. This morning I woke up with a fever and aches and my head is going to explode. Do you think I did this to myself? (I am, however, feeling better mentally, despite my pounding headache, for what that's worth.

4. Notwithstanding all the above, your blog makes me smile. :-)

1. Evesdropping on teenagers is a very brave thing to do.. usually if they don't think an adult is within earshot, the conversation can be quite scary!

2. I'm pregnant again!! (please keep fingers and toes crossed for a girl this time!!)

3. I have never been to the Eastern Shore and want to go very badly!!

Love that photo!
1. It's time for the boys to wrap our tiny front porch in black plastic (no kidding-it's darker than pitch in our house) and set up coffins and such in our front yard. Just for 2 hours of Trick-or-Treat.
2. I'm expected to look like a Zombie for T-or-T. Won't take much at all, in fact, I may have to pretty up myself for this one
3. Autumn Fest this weekend. Funnel cakes. 3030 carved pumpkins. need I say more?

2. Teenagers will never change. And I love it!
3. I think you need to plan a road trip.

1. Both my offices look like a tornado tore through them. That's just a coincidence, right?

2. Sleeping from 10 til midnite and then staying up til 1am and being unable to get back to sleep because of hot flashes is normal right? As normal as waking up between 4:30 and 5 every morning?

3. It's cold and wet here. My feet are cold. I haven't seen a bug in days. I wonder where my wool socks are. Am I getting the sniffles.

4. You should come west for a visit. We have cool weather and the bugs can't fly in the rain. Of course all the leaves have plugged up the storm drain and my street corner is underwater, but other than that, all is well!

Love, love, LOVE these comments - thank you so much for taking the time to leave them. Thursdays are always my favorite days for comments.

I especially love when my baby sister comments because she is truly, truly hilarious - at least to me she is.

The tale she is not telling here (but she did on Facebook) is that she thinks she broke her tailbone when the golf cart she was riding in went full-force in reverse and hit a curb square on.

Also, - congratulations Lynn M. This one will be a girl, my ESP says so. (Never mind there's a 50-50 chance of getting it right.)

Happy Birthday, Noe Noe. The OF is on.

Just getting home from yet another exhausting day and it's nowhere near over yet. Happy Thursday Night!

I believe you on the 6 pints of blood. When I worked at Newport News Shipbiuilding we used to joke that the worst hazard to navigation for fighter aircraft from Langley AFB were Mathews County mosquitoes.

Chesapeake Bay Woman said...

Babiest Sis - Is that you, Jill?

Rocket Man - Those Langley jets have a flight path right over my house - I swear I can see the pilots smiling in the cockpit, they fly so low. Anyway, our mosquitoes are most definitely navigation hazards (among other things), they are citation size here. It's nice to have you confirm this lest people think I'm exaggerating. Sure, they might not have sucked six pints, but they *are* the size of chicken hawks.

1. Asthma sucks;
2. Bronchitis is suckier;
3. Incipient pneumonia is suckiest of all;
3a. Kind of a dramatic way to avoid going out on Hallowe'en though;

That's about all the excitement I have, right now...

1. ALSO got 6 mosquito bites on my arm.... They are horrid creatures.

2. Learned that besides rodents in Mathews, there are SNAKES -- that've been in my workplace!!! (I've learned neither from seeing, but just from hearing -- and reading this blog.)

3. Started getting together my halloween costume -- I'm going as John the Baptist's decapitated head & my bestie is going as Herod's bloodthirsty wife. This probably makes me look like a weirdo, butttt, we're going to a halloween party where everyone's going as Bible characters... we're all adults, but we went to youth & young adult group together at church, so now, we're adultizing Bible characters. LOL!

Mrs. F - So very sorry to hear about all the sickness. Does not sound like a fun Halloween. Here's to a speedy recovery for your household.

New Girl-Welcome, and yours DOES sound like a fun Halloween. Yes, there are snakes, although winter time you shouldn't have anything to worry about. Much. Cold weather you can expect the rodents to come knocking on the front door. They will knock once and then when nobody answers they just crawl in your attic and set up shop until spring, when they are evicted by the ants. Just always expect something. That's the survival tactic I've adopted. Applies to all areas of my life, as a matter of fact.

Does anyone have information about Paulina & Charles Poole who were listed in the US Census before the Civil
