Sunday Drive

These scenes could very easily have been shot in Mathews, but they weren't.

Yesterday, as part of my quest to do anything but what needed to be done, I convinced a friend to go with me on a little adventure over the river and through the woods  involving a leisurely drive across a couple of rivers, a short walk through the woods and some long overdue lollygagging and philosophizing* along the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.

Doesn't that tree stump above look like someone pointing?  I thought so too. She was probably trying to direct our attention to all the sunlight bouncing off the choppy water, except she didn't have to go to all that trouble.  From the moment I laid eyes on that bay,  I was transfixed.

"Transfixed" sounds like a veterinary procedure.  I'd like to substitute the word "mesmerized" if it's OK.  Thank you.

This undeveloped patch of beach on the bay is known as Hughlett Point, a 204-acre wetland preserve. From the town of Kilmarnock, turn right as if you're headed towards Reedville and just follow the signs.

The drive was beautiful and the walk, just under two miles round trip, invigorating on a brisk fall day.

Click here for more information on the preserve.

Or here.

*Lollygagging and philosophizing are essential ingredients to a successful day of avoiding chores Sunday.  During this particular session my friend and I solved practically all the world's problems; discussed survival tactics for the cold, dark days of winter; and determined that if a person ever wants to be truly alone where they can hear the marsh grass grow themselves think, they should visit Hughlett Point.

Stay tuned for more scenes from this little field trip.

What did you do this weekend?

The sun on the water is definitely mesmerizing. Transfixing sounds like something you have done to your car.
What a wonderful walk. I tried walking with my lovely dog Lindy this weekend. We didn't get very far. I had my camera and she had an agenda. She wanted to go one way and I wanted to go another. So we both came home. O well, she thinks she had a walk, and I managed to get a few photos when I wasn't trapped with the leash wrapped around my legs.

I've been sick all weekend with some mega-sized variety of the crud. Wake myself up at night due to breathing so loudly and/or coughing, so I'm sleep deprived too.
Lovely photos, so glad you took some time for you! It is mesmerizing:)

I live only 15 minutes from Hughletts Point and we go there often. It is such a great walk and view when you get there is incredible! I'm glad you found it. We are blessed to have that in our county for everyone to enjoy! We had thought about going yesterday too but it was so windy we decided against it. Glad you didn't get blown away!!

I went to a friend's house to watch some of the Raven's game then went home where I laid in bed talking to another friend for a few hours while nursing a bad headache. Eventually I went out to dinner at a local Mexican Restaurant. Saw the signs for Hughletts Point, will definitely need to head that way when the weather is warmer.

Nothing as fun as that. Errands, beautification™, some major stress involving temporarily losing over 8 thousand photo (no, I am not exaggerating even a little) and at least 2.5 hrs on the phone either waiting for help or getting it on Apple's Express Lane Help phone line which seriously was running local.

worked and made peace with some old friends! There are plenty of great (hidden) spots if you just know where to look. I share mine with only a few special people.

We spent the weekend in PA - got to hang with my in-laws, which means my boys got to spend time with their favorite cousins. Oh, and we went to the Penn State game and witnessed Joe Paterno's 400th win! He's been head coach there since 1966. That's a long time to be at one job.

Oyster Festival was what I did this past weekend:) I got to see a Blister I hadn't seen in a while. Her hair looked FANTASTIC;) (I had a gift for her in my car, but forgot to give it to her.) Oh, and I gorged myself on fritters!!

Kay-Transfixed just doesn't sound right at all, does it? And watch that leash - I have a permanent scar from just such an episode.

Deborah-Hope you are feeling better, the crud, especially super-sized, is the worst.

Trinia-What a great place to have so close by. With any luck I have shots of the Shiloh School going up tomorrow or Wednesday depending on how much time I have tonight. What a beautiful area. That would have been funny running into you on Sunday - only two other people were there.

CG-That's what Sundays are for.

AM-No! That's what I was supposed to do. Am now going on Week 3 avoiding all that cleaning. The children may be ready to revolt.

MPM- Hope you took pictures of the food and the lollygagging. That Annie always has some good food.

Lynne M- Hope your baby is doing better. I remember how little sleep anyone gets when there's a sick little one.

Deltaville Jamie-Lots of interesting trees to photograph and good bay views. It's definitely not a strenuous hike (especially someone who can hike for three days on the Appalachian Trail) but your son might enjoy it. Provided there are "chockit shakes" afterwards, of course.

Daryl-Oh my goodness--at the potential loss of photographs. I would be hospitalized now - cardiac unit.

Anonymous-Sounds like a perfect weekend to me, and I'm sure your old friends were grateful to hear from you. Very grateful.

Me- Me too. I swear I thought it was a person pointing.

Meg-You had a fantastic weekend. I know because I saw the photo. Both of you were smiling from ear to ear.

BHE - What a blur it all was! Too many people, not enough time. Sorry we didn't get to stay longer but it was great seeing your Dad and family.

Who's had enough of this Dark at Five O'Clock business already? (My hand is raised high.)

Amazing! I got nostalgic while sorting old photos and started a new blog about growing up on the bay and find your post about it as soon as I log on! My part of the bay,at Chic's Beach, is a little further south but the lolly gagging was just as vigorous!

RM-Most of life's ailments are easily cured by a good day of lollygagging bayside, creekside or oceanside. I'm convinced.
