Red Shed

This cute red structure sits on the side of the road on the way to Haven Beach.  It so happens it's also on the way to Aaron's Beach, which is where I was headed this particular morning to go jogging.

Mind you, I had no intention of jogging on the beach. Rather, I wanted to park at the beach and take advantage of the flat, traffic-free road leading from there to this barn.  And back.

Mathews has countless miles of great roads for walking, jogging and biking.  Most of the county is twenty thousand leagues under the sea at or below sea level, so there are very few hills to worry about, septic systems notwithstanding.

And, as I was saying, there are very few cars, unless you're on 198 or 14, and then you can pretty much expect to get mowed over.

But I'm not talking about 198 or 14 except I just was.  I'm talking about this remote section of Nowhere near the public beaches.

Wanting to know how far this red building was from the parking lot at Aaron's Beach, I pushed in the odometer button  and was very pleased to see that it came to about 1.5 miles one way. Give or take.

Which was good since I wanted to run 3 miles. Give or take.

So I parked the car at Aaron's Beach, started running towards this barn, and ended up being chased and attacked by biting winged monkeys flies the entire way, making me wonder why I ever EVER think I can go jogging near any of our beaches and their associated swamps loaded with mutant insects marshes even though here in these pictures the beach and its associated marshes are 1.5 miles away. Give or take.

The End.

p.s. I almost swallowed one--a biting fly, that is. The whole nightmare reminds me of a saying I learned in 9th grade Spanish many years ago:  "En boca cerrada no entran moscas,"  which means flies don't enter a closed mouth.

Unless, of course, you're jogging down a swamp in Mathews County, in which case Good Luck! because the insects are going to win no matter what you do or how tightly you clench your jaws shut.

I applaud you for jogging, you go girl!
The flies are bad here this year too, and those bites are so itchy...
I've been walking a bit and also watching flocks of lycra-clad bicyclists ride by.

wv: subceru Even though its hot now, we are dreading the time when its subceru outside

When I die, I want to be sick so that's why I don't jog or run or do anything above a brisk meander. I also bring bug spray when I'm heading anywhere near the water. And as I was thinking about eating a fly being more protein I wondered if the entire fly is like a protein nugget or if the wings are considered carbs. I will think about this most of the day. You're welcome for that short trip into Jamie's head. It's a strange place. And another thought (aren't you lucky) the only Spanish I remember from 8th grade is el jabon so if I'm ever in Mexico and I'm really dirty and in the shower I'll know how to ask for soap.

I love Mathews but I detest bugs .. so I try never to go to the country .. other than to visit Mathews a visit to which was muchly missed this buggy season\

I believe 1.5 miles give or take is considerd an estulate (WV).

Daryl, are the bugs really that bad, I can't imagine them being worse than we have here in Florida. At least your cold weather should kill them.

I'll go jogging when the heat, humidity, and bugs go away...which should be right around the crack of November. :) BTW, from the pix we both take it seems our paths cross a lot but we never see each other! I thought about you today as I saw a bunch of great photo ops but there was no where to pull over and stopping in the middle of the raod wasn't a good idea. I needed a driver who'd let me out and then pick me up. Then we could switch off. Will probably head to the public beach at Hallieford again tonight--the dog prefers the calmer waters there. Got some great photos after the storm the other night at Hallieford--on my blog now.
