Stress Relief

It's been a busy week here in Casa de CBW, and today will be a continuation of that trend.

After driving the 50 miles to work, where I will sit at my desk with a scowl smile on my face starting at 7:30 a.m. sharp, I'll do my thing there before driving 50-ish miles further down the road to a track meet in King William.  There I will have to prop myself up will stand around for several hours waiting for my son's events to conclude.

Then we'll make the long trip back home over the river and through the woods before collapsing into a heap only half as high as the mountain of laundry waiting to be done.

These few shots, taken with the loaner camera , help illustrate Reason #1 why I love living in Mathews, even if that means having to drive a million miles to get anywhere: the water.

Our remote location and proximity to the water is for me an instant tranquilizer that tames the beast known as stress. A minute or two gazing at the water forces me to very quickly forget everything I've left behind in my daily travels. And for that I'm very, very grateful.

What in your daily activities is guaranteed to reduce your stress or assuage any worries?

First let me say I am glad you are using the loaner camera and I apologize that it isn't a GREAT AWESOME Loaner camera but happy that it is meeting a need instead of sitting in a drawer collecting dust.

I was thinking the other day what would happen if I had to use a loaner camera and it may have equated to something as having to use a hook for a hand. Useful just not the same.

What do I do to relieve stress... I run.. I kick.. I punch.. these things you know already. But today these things are causing me stress as I have developed the most horrid blister of all blisters and I have the half on Sunday! I am scared yet determined.

Off to stick the foot back in salt. nothing like a little salt in the wound.

Oh and I don't do all that driving.. that is one way I don't have stress!!

90% of the time, my ride on Metro is actually good for stress relief. I go inside my little Commuter Shell and read a book or work the two crossword puzzles in the free newspapers they throw at me as I enter the station. Sometimes, I snooze. I like that time. The other 10% of the time it sucks, but I'll take those odds. Another thing I really love doing is getting out for a walk downtown during lunchtime. There are quiet-ish neighborhoods only a few blocks from most of my client sites, and I enjoy strolling down N street, say, and trying to peer inside the English basements or ogling the pretty landscaping that we can't quite achieve out here where the deer roam free.

My stress relief will come Friday once I get across the Harry W. Nice bridge over the Potomac and make my way through Virginia to Deltaville. Then I will have Friday night through Sunday afternoon to do whatever I want with the best guy in the whole universe. Yes, I'm dating He-Man.

Looking at your pictures, reading your blog, and reading your mother's blog are all stress relievers. Your pictures of the Mathews area have helped solidify what I want when I grow up (retire). I want to be on the water, close to a walk-able beach (as opposed to a rocky shore). Now if I could just settle at least on a state! So far Maine, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Florida are all still in the running. Two years left to make up my mind.

Boy oh boy I can relate to that feeling of driving towards home and reaching that certain point where suddenly the stress melts off. For me, it's when I exit Rt. 7 and turn onto the parkway that leads to my neighborhood. Even though I'm still on a busy 4-lane road the traffic seems to mellow out and the landscaping is so pretty. I get this feeling of "Ahhhhhh.... I'm home."

Wondering when that feeling hits you? Is it from the moment you drive off the bridge? Or maybe when you cross into your county or pass a certain lake?

By the way, reading your blog has actually been another stress-buster for me. When the crazy world of northern VA gets to be too much your photos are right up there with Calgon bath beads. So forget "Calgon take me away...." It's more like "Janice's photos....take me away...."

Windsmurf, we're thinking the same thing as far as retirement. LOL maybe we can all move near here and start our own Mathews retirement circle 'o friends.

(And if we get bored we can go over to Williamsburg and get jobs as colonial village re-enactors. They need some older folks doing that, right? Adds a little touch of reality. --Betsy

To answer your question, your pictures of the water. Like you, last week was horrible (56 hours in 6 days) and this week isn't looking any better. When I get home, all I want is to get out of the dirty work clothes, get something to eat, and go to sleep.

Wonderful shots. Just wish I could hear the water lapping against the boat.

It's why you live where you do. Wonderful of your friend to lend you the camera.
