Silent Sunday

Silent except for this poem from a book called Gwynn’s Island Times.

October 5, 1950

MATHEWS, VA
By Mrs. Fenton Kimball

There’s no black factory smoke in Mathews, Va.
No tall building, or no great White Way.
No theater on every corner
To go to at the end of the day.

You won’t find a million people
No night clubs for you to attend;
But who wants a million people
If not one of them is your friend?

In Mathews we have sunshine,
Green grass and flowers in bloom,
A million birds to listen to,
Singing a happy tune.

We have pear and peach trees in blooming,
And air that is fragrant and sweet,
When you look at the sky—oh don’t ask me why,
But heaven and earth seem to meet.

And every place there’s a friendly face,
A hand clasp, a cheery “hello”—
Mathews, Va., is small—no denying it at all,
But it’s the most wonderful place that I know!

I don't know if you ever posted it, but how many people live in Mathews?
Today I actually paid attention to the population sign of our town.
We have 24,000 people living here.
How about you?

That's such a beautiful poem for what looks like a beautiful place.

Lovely poem. You have already sold us on the merits of living in sleepy Mathews...if I came, I woudl have to bring all the family, and you mightn't like the rise in population and perhaps the noise of 8 little grandchildren!

Annie

ps Awake in the night with yet another almost car accident outside on the sharp corner...I am ready to shift now!

Annie, there's no better place to raise children (or grandchildren) than here. The only thing you'll hear at night is a heron squawking or a dog barking.

I just got home, so I'm leaving a comment about yesterday's post. Butter mints are a totally separate food group. My grandmother had them in the house At. All. Times. For company, of course:) They were the reason we children were able to make it through some of those old boring wedding receptions!!!! Can you say "Sugar Buzz"???

We went to Colonial Wmbg. for the weekend. We stopped into the Raleigh Tavern and picked up homemade country ham biscuits, homemade cheese and hot apple cider. Jealous?? I'm REALLY feeling sorry for those people who have never had the pleasure of eating a ham biscuit. They will DEFINITELY be on the Blogapalooza menu:)

MPM - It's gonna be good.

Sigrid/BHE - Sounds like a wonderful way to spend an anniversary. I AM DEFINITELY jealous re those ham biscuits. Butter mints - that's what they were called, I would never have remembered that. Glad you had a good weekend.

When is the first ACDS basketball game?? Better yet, would you and yours like to join us for our Thanksgiving meal next Friday??? All are welcome.....

Of course, we can't do anything right. We are celebrating on Friday instead of Thursday. Too many relatives, too little time...

KD - Cost of living here is reasonable, that's for sure.

Sigrid/aka Ms. Shameless: Friday definitely has potential..

Oh and BHE - "We can't do anything right" is our family motto. Come Holiday Season we turn up it up a notch. Or seven.
