Queens Creek

One early morning here recently, a mist was rolling off the creek as the sun peeked first timidly and then more confidently through the thin layer of clouds.

(I wish I could say which morning this was, but they're all blurring together at this point.)

Off in the distance, someone was tending to his crab pots.

We're fast approaching my favorite month of the year, May.  I love May because everything that was dead and dull is green and alive.  The heat, humidity and killer, mutant ants and mosquitoes pesky insects have not yet descended.

I've had no time to report all the major happenings around here--and there is so much to report!

For now, just know we're still here, still enjoying early morning sunrises and always grateful for this beautiful place in which we live.

Baby Sis and I are headed to Nashville to run walk another half marathon and visit our good friend Lauren. Assuming I survive 13.1 miles that I haven't prepared for, I hope to resume blogging here within the next week or so, give or take.

Still Standing

These were taken a few weeks back just before the leaves started budding on the trees.  Winter is usually the best time to catch glimpses of some of the older abandoned structures that lurk in our many wooded areas, but this winter I didn't get out nearly enough to take pictures.

The poor daffodils sagging in the last few photos were only doing so because it was a cold, damp day.  They perk right up as soon as the sun arrives to warm them up.

(I can relate.)

I pass all of these hidden houses--and more--on my favorite jogging route in the county. That would be the very same jogging route I've visited far too infrequently this year, making me ill-prepared for anything resembling the half-marathon I'm signed up for on Saturday.

(But all will be fine.)

Baby Sis and I will walk a part of this half-marathon if we must, in spite of our inner competitive demons which despise the thought of surrender.  She claims her knees are "bone against bone" with no cartilage to speak of.  I respond with statements like, "The longest I've run recently was six miles one time the other week, but my memory's so bad it might have been the other month--and I've done nothing since then except sit at a desk or in a car. And eat.  I've done lots of eating."

It's almost like we're in a competition to see who is the least ready.

As I've said before though, we need no training to have a good time.

But that's all this weekend.

These next couple of days I'm off from work and will spend some time with Daughter and Son, who are on spring break.  Son will be working at Merroir most of the time, but we'll squeeze in an adventure or two that includes a trip "to town" as we say, also known as a trek "across the river."  Translation:  We're headed to Newport News to take care of things like haircuts and errands that we otherwise never have time for.

And we'll have fun.

Because that's what this family seems to do best.

Williams Wharf

These were taken a week or so ago from Williams Wharf.

It was one of those rare calm mornings when there wasn't even a ripple on the East River.

This old railway is so photogenic.

I parked here this particular morning to go for a jog.

Williams Wharf Road is exactly a mile from end to end, so it's easy to keep track of your distance. Speaking of distance, Baby Sis and I are scheduled to run 13.1 miles in Nashville a week from Saturday.  I can tell you that I've never been less prepared for a half marathon in my life, but that's OK.

If I have to walk, I'll walk.

Nashville

Mental P Mama (aka Lauren) and Baby Sis

After a very rough week, I am now traveling to Tennessee with Baby Sister to run walk participate in another half marathon. We'll be running  walking  doing this with my blog friend Lauren, who traveled with us last year to the Outer Banks for 13.1 miles of misery bliss there.

We intend to have lots of fun.

Baby Sis's talents are many and diverse.
She's a graceful, enthusiastic dancer.

In fact, we are experts at having fun.

I'll fill you in on our jolly journey when I return.

Have a great weekend.

Hills Bay

This stretch of road on Gwynns Island is my favorite.

Wednesday, since I hadn't exercised since before Thanksgiving in a while and the weather was unseasonably warm,  I decided to go for a jog.

That's Deltaville off in the distance.

But rather than jogging down Beaverlett way where I normally go,  I decided to change things up and drove to Gwynns Island.

I'm a little bit bored with the Beaverlett route even though I have lots of options to take different roads.  I've never jogged on Gwynns Island before and there are lots of back roads that are infrequently traveled, perfect for a leisurely run.

Mouth of the Piankatank River

I parked the car at Tin Can Alley and jogged down to the campground, then down Gum Thicket Road, then down a few dirt roads and back to my car.

Only two cars passed me the whole trip, which was somewhere between three and four miles in length.

Both drivers waved.

Reason #99 I love living in Mathews.

Have a great weekend.
