Milford Haven

Over the weekend, after a morning jog down Redart, I drove over to Gwynn's Island
to stop in on an old friend by the name of Milford Haven.

These seagulls were also saying hello to old Milford.

These were taken Saturday from the Seabreeze.

On Sunday I had lunch with a friend at the Seabreeze, which continues to make an outstanding hamburger--a rare treat for me these days.

Daughter upped and went vegetarian on me over a year ago, so I very rarely eat meat anymore myself, because, really, what's the point in fixing two meals when one will suffice?  (I'm all about efficiency. There's also a very fine line between laziness and efficiency.)

On a day-to-day basis, I don't really miss eating meat, but every now and then a girl just has to have a hamburger, doggone it!  Or else!

And Sunday at the Seabreeze was one of those days.

I am working on an "I MUST HAVE A STEAK RIGHT. THIS. VERY. SECOND!" day.  I think the last time I had steak was...to be perfectly honest, it's hasn't been in 2016.  It's been several months.  Many.  And a craving is just a -brewin'.

But back to Daughter.  Or were we talking about Milford Haven?  Or steak?  Mmmm. Steak. No! Back to Daughter.

She was accepted early action to the University of Virginia's School of Architecture and continues to amaze me.  We're nearing the end of basketball season, and she's done an incredible job on the court as well as the classroom.

More on all this in a later post.

Right now all I am thinking about is a nice, juicy, salty steak.

Sea Farms

Last week my parents took me over to the old ice plant to procure seafood for an upcoming family gathering.

Going to the ice plant, now known as Sea Farms, is somewhat of a walk down Memory Lane for my father, who worked here briefly as a teenager.

My father has a good rapport with the owner and the folks who work there, and it was nice to see him so animated and happy on our visit.  He's been mourning the loss of his good friend and our neighbor Sidney.

We bought some tuna and several pounds of Carolina shrimp and happily made our way back outside.

(My mother was so giddy, she broke out into spontaneous dance even.  Evidently fresh seafood has deep, positive, uncontrollable effects on this family. Regrettably, my camera was not poised to capture her impressive, music-less moves.)

It was a very successful trip.

I'm looking forward to the next visit.

Gazing

These were taken back in 2011 from the public landing at the Seabreeze and although I've posted them several times before, I never tire of gazing at them.

I did a lot of gazing at the water this weekend.  The weather Saturday and Sunday was spectacular.  Saturday a friend and I ate outside at my favorite restaurant Merroir, where the food was outstanding and the views relaxing.  Sunday I spent a lot of time on my back deck soaking up the sun and watching the boats parade up and down Queens Creek.

This week will be another busy one for me.  Work is becoming more hectic, at home the grass needs cutting, and on Friday I drive to Charlottesville to retrieve Son, who has successfully made it through his first year of college.

Time continues to fly by at record speeds.

So I don't feel at all guilty for slowing down when I can and staring off into the water when the opportunity presents itself.  It's therapeutic.

Road Trip

These were taken Saturday

on my little excursion to Gwynn's Island.

It was a gorgeous day.

The weather hasn't been so gorgeous this week, thanks to some cloudy, overcast skies that spit out a little rain here and there. Daughter, who has been on Spring Break all week, and I are heading west to visit Virginia Tech and Charlottesville.  Although it will be a lot of driving, I'm looking forward to our little escape.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Seabreeze

Saturday a friend and I drove over to Gwynns Island for lunch at the Seabreeze, which fronts Milford Haven.

The Seabreeze is the county's only waterfront restaurant.

The views alone are reason enough to eat there.

Since Daughter went vegetarian last year, I've not had many opportunities to indulge in a really good cheeseburger. I also can't remember the last time I've had french fries of any description, much less hand-cut ones that actually tasted like potatoes.  But I seized the moment and ordered both.

The food matched the spectacular views and the general mood of a lazy Saturday with no races to run, no track meets to attend, and no chores that couldn't be ignored for a few weeks months days longer.

The Seabreeze was one of the highlights of an entire weekend dedicated to lollygagging slowing down and appreciating the moment.

Busy

These were taken back in December 2012 from the public landing at the Sea Breeze over on Gwynn's Island. I've been so busy here lately, there's been no opportunity to take new photographs.

Monday night it snowed just enough to postpone Tuesday night's basketball game against Charles City.  They will instead play tonight.  I confess the delay was a relief. Not only was I exhausted from a brutally long day at work, but Daughter has been enduring a sore throat, which I'm hoping will clear up by the time the game rolls around.

Other than that, I'm doing three people's jobs busy at work, busy at home.

Busy, busy, busy.  With no end in sight.

Happy Wednesday.

Milford Haven

For  what feels like three weeks the third day in a row, my internet provider seems to be trying to kill me testing my patience.  Service has been intermittent since Sunday.

Here's a blog post with minimal words simply because I have to post while I can, and at least I was able to load these few pictures.

If you're in Mathews and see a mushroom cloud forming over the 23076 zip code and Queens Creek vicinity, you'll know the internet provider has pushed me and my very limited patience too far.

Hope your week is going better than mine well.

Rope

All except the last shot were taken from the public landing at Edwards Creek over on Gwynn's Island.  That last one, taken from the Seabreeze, includes a glimpse of the full (or close to full) moon in the upper right corner.

Daughter and I took a joy drive over to the island Saturday after supper.  Son is spending the week at a NASA program, so she and I are trying to keep ourselves busy and distracted, once again. (He left us earlier this summer for Boys State and let's just say we were ecstatic extremely happy when he returned.)

Sunday we went for a five-mile hike over in the Northern Neck.  (She was not too thrilled with this idea of mine, particularly since it was hot and her tennis shoes were less than ideal for the hike, but we got our exercise in, that's for sure.)

There's more to report, but this post will be brief.  My internet has been acting up, so I want to toss this up while the gettin' is good. A storm last night must have caused a temporary outage, and it's pouring down again this evening with even more clouds headed in this direction.

Hope all is well in your world.

Boats

These are a few random boat scenes.

Callis Wharf

Edwards Creek

Redart

Today I'm in Charlottesville with Son and Daughter meeting with college admissions people. As much as I love Mathews, I am thrilled to be away from home even if it's just for a night.

Each day that passes brings me closer to my vacation in July, which cannot get here fast enough.  Between work, end of the school year stuff, house and yard maintenance, and Daughter's decision to play summer softball, which requires forty million games between now and the end of the month, let's just say nothing in the world will make me happier than to be a solid four to five hours away from any responsibilities other than deciding what's for supper and whether to get in the pool or the hot tub.

(Also?  Daughter has never played softball before in her life. Just as we're finally getting a break from the chains of the school calendar and sports schedule, we have a new one to dictate our life.)

Anyway, enough of my complaining. All in all, I have nothing to complain about and everything to be grateful for. However, I'm living for that week of vacation. The End.

Have a great week.
