Warehouse Landing

Friday, hoping to kill time in between errands in Gloucester, I drove down to  Warehouse Landing.

In a field on the right as you approach the landing is this cute little house.

And this one (below), which looks like the faintest wind gust could topple it over.

Coincidentally this public landing is where Blog Reader/Commenter Betsy and her husband, who were visiting Williamsburg and Gloucester this weekend, went kayaking on Saturday.

After kayaking, they drove to my house for a quick tour of Mathews that began with the observation deck at the lighthouse.

Betsy and Husband's visit to Mathews was brief but hopefully I convinced them to return, if for no other reason than the promise of more strawberries from my mother's garden.

(BTW, the strawberries are to die for and very abundant.)

Thanks, Betsy & Husband, for the visit. I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope you come back again soon!

Ware House

Soybean field leading down to public landing in Gloucester

These were taken a couple of weeks ago in neighboring Gloucester County at the end of Ware House Road.

There's a public landing there called Warehouse Landing.

If you happen to be wondering why the road name is two separate words and the landing is one merged name, you're in good company. Or rather, you're in my company.  And this question will haunt me throughout the day today.  Warehouse Landing at the end of Ware House Road on the Ware River. Was it a warehouse on the Ware River or a house on the Ware River or both? Although I'm not ever usually a stickler for details, this one is perplexing.

Raise your hand if you're already confused, tired of hearing the words Ware and house, or just plain aggravated that it's Monday?

(Chesapeake Bay Woman, put your hand down.)

I've posted shots of this house and its outbuilding several times before, most recently in April before the tornado.

Click here to see how it's changed, albeit slightly, in just a few months.

Speaking of subtle changes, on a drive through Gloucester County yesterday, I noticed that the lush green which peaked in July and August has started to give way to a lackluster, dull, dry green. The cornfields have already turned a crispy brown and some have even been harvested.

Fall is just around the corner, and this depresses me just a bit.

A few questions for this Monday:

1. Who can tell me anything about Warehouse Landing in Gloucester?  (Dear Chesapeake Bay Mother, since you lived near this road as a youngster, I am hoping you can provide some much-needed facts and information.)

2. Which do you prefer, the stifling heat and humidity warmth and vibrant, green colors of summer or the ominous signs of winter cool, brisk days of fall?

3. After a week without an earthquake, tornado, water spout, hurricane, or other natural disaster, I am wondering if it's safe for me to put away the plywood that covered my windows or if I should just keep it on the back deck in anticipation of the next natural disaster. Thoughts? Opinions?

Have a great week.

Rebirth

This series of photographs was taken from the public landing at the end of Warehouse Road in neighboring Gloucester.

Each picture juxtaposes something dead, colorless and seemingly lifeless with the green and beauty of spring.

The remains of a dock...

or a tree

clinging to the shoreline.

"I happened to notice that all these pictures featured new growth as well as death;  then I realized it was Easter weekend, and also spring!

(Sometimes it takes me a while, but eventually I cobble such obvious facts together. Other days I wonder how I am able to function as a contributing member of society when it is the Friday before Easter and I'm only now catching up with the fact that it's spring. Or the Friday before Easter. Or the year 2011.)

As all these profound thoughts flooded my cluttered addled brain, it occurred to me that you might just like the pictures without all the extraneous Deep Thoughts, and so I will end on this note:  Enjoy today; enjoy the weekend; enjoy the gift called Life."

Warehouse Landing

Kids? Never EVER take pictures while driving. Thank you.

Today I am sharing some photos of Warehouse Road in neighboring Gloucester County.

I drove down here last week hoping to kill time in between an errand and the start of a Grandparents' Day program at Chesapeake Bay Daughter's school.

At the very end of the road lives this old house,

a cute little outbuilding,

and public access to the Ware River.

OK, technically this is someone's yard.  But just beyond this was the public landing. I promise.

Stay tuned for more shots from my trip down Warehouse Landing in Gloucester.

Question of the Day
When was the last time you turned onto a road  you wouldn't ordinarily go down just because you could or had some time to spare?

I am the Queen of No Spare Time, but in this case the choice was either to sit idle in a parking lot or go exploring. To me, that's not really a choice. That's a mandate.
