Three Things

Is it Thursday again so soon?

On Thursdays we share three things, but I don't think I have three things to share.

Hmm. Let's see.

1. Friday from 4 - 6 I have a book signing at Dilly Dally Emporium in Mathews Court House. Please stop by if you can, not just for the signing but also because Dilly Dally carries great gift ideas such as Catherine Brooks's new book. Worthy of another post entirely, Mrs. Brooks has a very special connection not only to Mathews County, but to the Dilly Dally location in particular.

2. Saturday from 11:30 to 2:30 there's another signing at Twice Told Tales in Gloucester Court House on Main Street. If it's been a while since you've visited Gloucester Court House, you might be surprised at all the changes. Twice Told Tales not only carries books of local interest but has a great selection of children's books.

3. Saturday evening is the Waverly Lane Christmas party, hosted this year by my parents, next door. I just remembered I'm supposed to bring meatballs and am only now realizing how little time there will be between the book signing and the start of the party. Better fire up the crock pot before I leave for the signing--to the extent that a crock pot is actually ever really fired up...

4. At the very opposite end of the crock-pot-meatball culinary spectrum (not that there's one single thing wrong with crock pot meatballs), my blog friend Daryl has been sending me links to possible restaurants we will go to when I visit her  (and her and her and hopefully Maria from NJ) in New York after Christmas. To someone who hasn't spent time in a major city in, oh, ten or more years, the thought of eating anything that is not my own cooking at a place like this or this or this makes me even crazier than usual crazy with excitement and almost allows me to forget about the stress of the next ten days. Almost.

5. The words thank you are entirely inadequate to convey my feelings of gratitude to the community for the support with the book. Thank you for buying the book but also thank you for the kind words in the grocery store, Walmutant, the gas pump, the post office--it's overwhelming, and I truly appreciate it.

And here I thought I had nothing to say. Evidently I had three things to share and two to spare.

What's going on in your world?  Do you have a good recipe for crock pot meatballs?

1. Our girls varsity basketball team had their first win this season (which already ties us with the number of wins from last season...).

2. I decided to make some scarves for Christmas gifts. I made that decision yesterday. I need 3-4. What are the chances I manage to complete this?

3. Go buy a bag of meatballs in the frozen food dept then add whatever sauce into the crockpot. All done. (even better if you can add a sauce that is already made and comes in a jar)

4. I love Twice told Tales, I make sure I go there every summer.

1. Happy Thursday everyone, it is Friday to me because I am off work tomorrow, so it is a great Thursday/Friday.
2. Your book was delivered on Tuesday and I sat right down and read the whole thing at once. I enjoyed it very much. I had to look for telltale things such as the age of the cars in many of the picture pairs since little else had changed and you kept alternating the order of the then and now/now and then pictures. One thing that really stood out was there seemed to be a lot more people taking care of their business in town in the older pictures than in the newer ones - except for at the Christmas Parade recently pictured in your Blog.
3. Matt goes to Johns Hopkin today to see if they can figure out why he passes out all the time. Hopefully, they will be able to help.

windsmurf-I could not agree more about the placement of the pictures in the book; that was out of my control, and when everything was said and done and i finally saw it layed out i couldn't believe how difficult it was to tell current from old. This was especially true for me since the entire year and a half I'd been working on this, I was looking at my pictures in COLOR vs. the old in black and white, so it was obvious which was which. The publisher's format required my photos to be sepia (or whatever the shade is), and they controlled what went where. Sigh. I might not have tried to shoot the angle so precisely the same had I known-although that, too, was a requirement.

Thanks for buying it and enjoy your days off!

1. Homemade caramels taste wonderful but are a bit "sticky" to try to wrap up.

2. Husbands who volunteer to help wrap sticky caramels should be sainted.

3. Crockpot meatballs sound delicious to me!

CBW, I make a meat ball sauce using Grape Jelly an Chili Sauce. Do it about 60% jelly to 40% chili sauce...it melts together as it heats and is yummy. I would mix it in a bowl (it'll be lumpy) and pour over the meatballs in the crock pot.

Hi, CBW. My meatball recipe is similar to Sweetliz's. Frozen meatballs, a large jar of grape jelly and a large bottle of ketchup. I like to bake my meatballs a little first so I can get rid of some of the grease. put them in the crockpot, with the jelly and the ketchup and let 'er rip. The chili sauce sounds good, too. Maybe use half ketchup and half chili sauce.

Good luck this weekend with all your book signings!

Oh gosh I wish I could fed-ex overnight you some dang meatballs...

when Mom was alive she always thought my way of making meatballs was sacrilegious, I don't fry mine, I cook them in the oven, and make sure you line your cookie sheet with Reynolds release foil, for easy clean up! After coming out of the oven just put them in the crockpot with jarred sauce that you doctor up a bit, you know, some garlic powder and Italian spices....I'm assuming you are making meatballs of the Italian decent...

but if you want to make something that is really easy and everyone will love have you ever made this...

omg it is addicting...really good with celery sticks...I have made it with half mozzarella and half cheddar and the blue cheese dressing, if you have one of those little crock pots you can keep in warm in there...

just breathe....

My recipe is to go to Trader Joe's, buy the frozen ones, and put them in Newman's marinara sauce. The end.

I think your blog, CBW is the only one I read the comments through from beginning to end!

Your photos today are magnificent as usual. Hope the meatballs get done ok, I am sure they will be delicious after reading all the assorted recipes above!

Missing the little family who have jetted off to see the other grandparents in New Zealand for Christmas. Have had my big sister here helping me do a big clean up of my mum's papers and clothes that have been living here since she passed away. Nice to have a bit of a breather from the little children, and sort out my own house too!

My brother in law is recovering nicely from his emergency surgery a week or so ago. Whew. A close one! He is one lucky man.

My telephone connection is not working. Argh. Third time this has happened before Christmas to me in about the last three years. Ah, thank goodness for cell phones and wifi modems, even though they are expensive, what would we do without them!
